Executive Training and Education
The first university lab dedicated to agentic finance.
City Agentic Finance Lab (CAFiL) helps leaders in financial services understand AI agents well enough to decide, govern and lead with confidence. Our programmes are built on the lab’s research and on the academic foundation of our MSc programmes.

PhD research
PhD research at CAFiL connects engineering research with the questions financial services face as AI agents begin to act for customers and firms. Topics build on our four research themes (agentic payments and commerce; credit and risk intelligence; compliance engineering and AI assurance; and digital money and tokenisation) and on the 20 fields of our experiments, from consumer lending and SME finance to agent-to-agent markets and tokenised funds. Projects can be technical, empirical or both: building and evaluating agents, simulating markets, or studying governance and regulation.
PhD researchers take part in the work of the lab. They design and run experiments, contribute to the Evidence Programme, co-author with CAFiL members and partners, and work on real problems with industry partners, with access to data where partners agree. Where appropriate, they present their work at Agentic Finance Talks and Roundtables. Supervision is in the Department of Engineering and depends on the fit between a proposal and our members’ expertise.
Applications are made through the university’s research-degree process. Before applying, send us a short CV and a two-page outline of your idea: we will tell you whether it fits our themes and how to take it further.
